Never Look Back

theatre play

2020

“Never Look Back“ is a reinterpretation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice that is part of the Orpheus festival of Staatsoper Berlin. In the myth the loving pair has been separated through the death of Eurydice. Fulfilled with sadness Orpheus is searching for his love and conquers all obstacles on his way to the underworld by playing his lyre. In his final task he is asked to exit the underworld without looking back at his love, which he fails during the last metres.

Following the formats of pop culture and social media, this play focuses on the diversity and incongruity within the myth from a postmodern perspective where information is democratised. Even though the protagonists of the myth are Orpheus and Eurydice, they do not participate in this performance, but various secondary characters who report on the two main characters and raise the question of what is true and what is not.
